But by the early 2000s, mismanagement and rising debt crippled operations. In 2003, a philanthropist's foundation threw a lifeline, rebranding it as Centinela Regional Medical Center. Yet the reprieve was temporary. By 2019, the hospital was drowning again — outdated equipment, staff exodus, and looming closure.

After 9 years practicing in the NHS and London teaching hospitals, British-born Thompson took the Director role in 2021. He saw Centinela not as a lost cause, but as a mirror of the underfunded but resilient public hospitals he knew back home.

Within months, Thompson realized private funding would never be stable. He made a controversial, career-defining decision: lobby to convert Centinela into a county-run governmental hospital.

Facing fierce opposition from board members and local politicians, Thompson spent over a year negotiating, testifying at hearings, and restructuring finances. In early 2023, the county government officially absorbed Centinela under its public health department.

Centinela is now Centinela Public General Hospital — a government-funded safety net hospital. It's not glamorous. Equipment is still partially outdated. Paperwork is mountainous. But the lights stay on. No one is turned away for inability to pay.

Staff grumble about bureaucracy, but respect Thompson for saving them from extinction. He's known for walking the wards at dawn, clipboard in hand, with a calm British voice that says: "We're not closing. We're just getting started."

Trainee
Medical students, nursing interns, admin assistants in probation. Observe, learn, limited patient contact under supervision.

Staff
Full nurses, radiology techs, phlebotomists, orderlies, junior admin. Core daily work – cannot override protocols or order major supplies.

Senior
Charge nurses, senior radiographers, lead paramedics, lab supervisors, shift coordinators. Can make minor policy calls and mentor Staff.

Chief
Department Chiefs. Manage rosters, discipline, budgets for their unit. Report to Director.

Director
Final authority on hiring, firing, budget, crisis decisions, press statements, and hospital-wide policy.
